Thanksgiving + whatnot
Here are two birds.
This is ben.
This is not.
We ate ben for thanksgiving dinner. Along with a lot of other things like homemade dinner rolls!
We had an insane potlucked menu, and of course everyone ate waaay too much and food coma'd for a while. All the leftovers were completely gone by friday. (there were a LOT of leftovers. Go team devour!)
Ps. Yeast is not cheese and it's tastes + smells really gross. Do not put it in / around your mouth unless there's also a lot of water butter flour etc with it. And it's been baked.
Mira and Derek also model for Abercrombie in their free time.
In conclusion:
Rome or Death!

Fascism and Italy
I think I have a fascist fetish. This building is the Palazzo Della Poste in Piazza Bologna, and it's designed by Mario Ridolfi, who is part of the Groupo 7. The Groupo 7 (does the name Giuseppi Teragni ring any bells?) is a group of 7 architects who worked for mussolini during the world war era, making Rome into a more fascist state through their architectural interventions. This post office happens to be the building I'm studying for my building analysis, and I LOVE IT.
This is the interior of the post office (oh no terrorism!!) of the main staircase that is generated by the curved facade. My professor told me that he wouldnt help me if I got arrested when he saw me taking the pictures.
Here's another staircase I think is pretty awesome. This is in the La Rinascente building that's on the outskirts of rome. (it felt like it was on mars because we walked FOR EVER to get there.)
And speaking of mars... Look at what I've been seeing around rome!
Check out www.space-invaders.com for more info on that. It's pretty cool.

Chocolate chip cookies + shortbread
This is how Karrah and I spent our morning/afternoon. It was all delicious + made from scratch. Also, apparently Italians can't digest milk very well, which is the reason why cappuccinos are only served in the mornings. This may or may not be a myth. But FACT is that they dont eat home-made chocolate chip cookies. They're missing out big time.
Boots
39 Euros; Piazza Testaccio. Monday - Saturday 7am - 1pm. Designer boots + shoes for cheap. Be there or be square.

Landscraper; midterm project
Had my midterm review today. Area was located on the outskirts of Rome (right near this awesome mall, actually. I got a cute sweater.) and my idea was based upon using the idea of this historic building right off the site, transforming it into a kind of monument. Here are some of my renderings. =] Enjoy.

AAAA
So I went back to Porta Portese (GIGANTIC FLEA MARKET every sunday from 6am to 2pm in Rome) today and I needed to brag.
2 Euros. =] my sisters would love this place.
On another (loud) note, this is what I hear every sunday at noon. Turn the volume on your computer WAY UP to get an idea of what it really sounds like. I'm standing in my window, next to my bed, with my camera NOT zoomed in. That's how close it is. NO SLEEPING IN FOR ALLIE!

Pita bread + the Colosseum
For drawing class, we've begun using Conti crayons so we took a trip to the Colosseum to practice our Light/Dark drawings.
And I visited an international market and got PITA BREAD! They also had olives, but they were expensive and I wasnt sure how to ask for the amount I wanted. They also had EVERYTHING.
Including fresh fish. this area of the market smelled awful so I stayed near the veggies and fruits. (and olives)
There's apparently a really large african and indian population in this corner of Rome, which is awesome because I love indian food. (I got lamb curry with rice and vegetable samosas today. so delicious.) In the US we're able to get all sorts of cuisines at the drop of a hat, but the food culture here is very different, and it's making me appreciate all the foods I can't find. Which is why I was so excited about pita bread. 1 euro for a sack of bread! Cheap!
For our materials + methods class, we're going around to different churches in Rome to check out the structure and materials used. Here are a few snapshots of interesting places. Do you know any of them?
In other interesting news, I've joined the 4 grad students who are with us on the trip in their cooking circle, so we take turns making dinner every night. I just made my first dinner, baked ziti a la sally shabouk, and everyone raved about it. Success!

Naples + Pompeii
This past weekend we bussed down to Naples.
October 1: Historic center of Naples.
The stone on the exterior is Piperno stone, which is made using volcanic ash and is local only to this area of Italy. (apparently.)
October 1: Historic center of Naples.
Chiesa del Gesu Nuovo.
We toured the historic center, saw a bunch of churches, sketched a lot, and were brought below ground to the ancient city road.
Also, Naples is a really dirty city. Lots of garbage everywhere and LOTS of graffiti.
-
October 2;
we drove along the Amalfi coast (but I forgot my camera. sad ) Did lots of sketching though, so I'll upload some sketches later.
-
October 3! Pompeii
The forum with Vesuvius behind.
